Mold and Moisture Investigation

What is mold?

Since the mid-1990’s there have been sensational reports in the national news media concerning “black mold” or “toxic mold”. These reports led to a great deal of confusion for the general public regarding mold, mold clean-up, and, more important, the potential health hazards relative to exposure to mold and mold spores.

Mold is a general term describing ubiquitous fungi growing predominately outdoors. Mold spores may enter into the indoor environment through open windows and ventilation systems, as well as tracking on the soles of building occupants, and on clothing, pets, and other items carried from outdoors to indoors. Therefore, it is not uncommon to find mold indoors.

Moisture

It is generally accepted by professionals that a significant aspect of controlling indoor mold infestation is to control moisture. Therefore, it is critical for occupants and building managers to address water leaks as soon as possible after detection.

Mold Testing

Testing for mold inside your home or office when apparent mold growth is present is often unnecessary, unless the objective is to document the variety and extent of contamination prior to clean-up and remediation. However, if an occupant is experiencing health effects thought to be caused by mold exposure, it might be time to consult a professional to assess the suspect area.

When to call

If you suspect there is a mold source affecting the IAQ of your home or office, O&EA can help.

O&EA has conducted moisture and mold investigations in residential and commercial buildings throughout New England and New York. Depending on the unique circumstances of each case, surface and/or air sampling may be recommended.
